En 1936, à l’occasion de la naissance de son fils, Robert Bernas achète à Vienne sa première caméra : une Eumig 8mm. Comme la plupart des cinéastes amateurs, il fixe sur la pellicule les moments de bonheur. En mars 1938, l'Autriche est annexée par l’Allemagne nazie. Robert détourne alors sa caméra du cercle familial pour la diriger sur les événements qui se déroulent sous ses yeux.
