1960. Samba, jeune militant socialiste dont le père est un commerçant bien installé de Bamako, rencontre au cours de l’une de ses missions en brousse Lara. Lara profite de Samba pour fuir sa famille qui veut la marier de force. Tandis que Lara découvre une nouvelle vie à Bamako, Samba commence à contester haut et fort certaines décisions de sa hiérarchie depuis que son père a été emprisonné. Nos deux héros se retrouvent un soir dans un des nombreux clubs de danse de Bamako et jurent de ne plus jamais se quitter. Mais les évènements vont en décider autrement…
