W 1876 roku prawie wszystkie plemiona Indian zawarły już pokój. Jedynie Komancze na czele z Wodzem Czarną Chmurą napadają na miasta. Z jednego ataków ratuje się zaledwie sześciu żołnierzy. Wśród nich jest sierżant Trainor. Uciekinierzy decydują się na podróż do najbliższego fortu. Muszą jednak pokonać tysiąc mil przez pustynię. Mają przy sobie mało wody. Wkrótce próbują negocjować z wodzem Komanczów, któremu również doskwiera pragnienie.
