Norvège, décembre 1942. Sarah et Daniel, jeunes enfants juifs, tentent d'échapper à la Milice locale et à la déportation en se cachant dans la cave des parents de l’intrépide Gerda, 10 ans, et d’Otto, 13 ans. Mais lorsque leurs parents sont arrêtés la veille de Noël, les deux enfants vont aider Sarah et Daniel à fuir vers la Suède, en pays neutre. Ils devront affronter de nombreux périls et fuir les nazis lancés à leur poursuite avant d'arriver au bout du voyage.
