In een puriteins dorpje wordt Frieda door de gemeenschap met de vinger gewezen dat ze kinderloos is. Hierop stort de vrouw zich op het gebed en rituelen. Wanneer ze ongeschonden terugkeert uit het verboden bos dat het dorp omringt, wordt ze veroordeeld als duivelsaanbidster. Het toeval wil dat Frieda een nieuw geloof in de duistere krachten van het bos heeft gevonden.
